History

Green field under a cloudy blue sky.

A national network, built on independence

The Shaughnessy Group was founded in 2017 and has grown into a national network of independent advisors serving privately owned Canadian businesses. Every member stays independent. That is how we attract experienced professionals who want the support of a platform without giving up control of their practice.

Purpose

Businessman working at desk with documents and laptop.

Serving owners the large firms overlook

Owners of businesses with $5 million to $50 million in revenue are often caught in the middle. Large investment banks may not prioritize them, and a passive listing service does not give them the preparation a complex sale needs. We built The Shaughnessy Group to bring a rigorous process to these owners.

Bay street discipline for main street businesses

Can Canadian owners get a rigorous sale process and access to buyers at home and abroad? We believe they can. A network of seasoned operators and executives can deliver it to the lower middle market.

Why the timing matters

76 per cent of business owners plan to exit within 10 years, which could move more than $2 trillion in assets. Only 9 per cent have a formal succession plan. Owners who wait until they are ready to sell often discover how much preparation a good outcome needs. We guide them through every stage.

We have seen all sides of the table

Our members have been advisors, entrepreneurs, lenders, executives, investors, board members and operators. That experience helps them anticipate problems before they reach the deal table.
Owners also come to us for more than a sale.

Scale Your Journey

Ready to grow your practice without doing it all yourself?

If sourcing, research and administration are crowding out your advisory work, a shared platform can give you that time back. Talk to us about how the model works.

For the entrepreneur turned advisor

You have built, run or financed businesses. We help you turn that experience into an advisory practice, backed by process, research and a team that has seen all sides of the table.

Amplify Your Impact

For the independent consultant: spend more time advising

Business development and back-office work limit your billable hours. Here is what changes when you join:

  • A shared pipeline effort. The team and its networks work together to find mandates. We do not promise specific deal flow.
  • A recognized brand. You are no longer pitching yourself as a sole operator.
  • Expertise on call. Draw on colleagues for complex files, share best practices and use shared IT and marketing support.
  • Tools and visibility. Use our M&A tools, databases, research, speaking opportunities and thought leadership content.
  • Larger mandates. Our networks help you pursue engagements that are hard to win alone.
  • Pay tied to results. Compensation is performance based.

 Is this a fit?

This suits you if you:

  • have senior experience as an operator, executive, lender, investor or advisor
  • want income tied directly to results
  • are entrepreneurial and self-directed
  • prefer an independent environment
  • are excited by M&A advisory

Under the guidance of Karl & Arne, and by being immersed in the center of the business, this opportunity provided a raw insight into what a career in investment banking, particularly in M&A advisory, would look like. It also allowed me to discover my strengths, recognize what I am good at, and identify what I truly enjoy. My favorite part of the internship was learning the inspiring stories of the companies and entrepreneurs we collaborated with. From financial statement reconciliation to engaging directly with clients, my experience at The Shaughnessy Group has been eye-opening in learning the craft of investment banking. Working at this boutique firm allowed me to grasp the step-by-step process of closing deals and sourcing opportunities to ultimately aid our clients, including entrepreneurially minded professionals, in their endeavors. My initial foray into the world of investment banking began by studying the resources provided by The Shaughnessy Group to comprehend the processes integral to a structured program, which prepared me for my daily responsibilities. As I became more familiar with the systems and procedures, I was entrusted with increasing responsibilities and opportunities for growth, such as participating in client meetings and developing targets lists. Eventually, handling four projects was a welcome challenge that pushed me to enhance my efficiency while my line managers encouraged me to manage matters independently and express my ideas freely. Being part of this boutique firm gave me the rare chance to view projects from a high-level perspective instead of being confined to repetitive tasks common in many investment banking jobs. Throughout my internship, Mr. Karl Sigerist and Mr. Arne Hassle Gren were invaluable resources, always available for clarifications. I encountered fascinating clients and colleagues, which pushed me to improve, and I can confidently say that my time as an intern has significantly enhanced my investment banking acumen, especially in M&A advisory, thanks to this hands-on approach.

My time here at The Shaughnessy Group has been nothing but amazing. While initially a bit intimidating (as most internships are), the management team was quick to ensure that the whole team felt comfortable and capable of completing tasks. Over the first few weeks of working on live deals in investment banking jobs, I gained a realistic understanding of M&A advisory and investment banking as a whole. What I appreciated the most was how unrestricting the team was when it came to trying new things and taking calculated risks. My mentor encouraged me to design slides in my own creative manner and allowed me to attempt my own financial model. As an entrepreneurially minded professional, I was constantly given the opportunity to showcase my individuality and personal skillsets while effectively representing the firm and its brand. The work was exciting and intellectually stimulating, and this internship will undoubtedly aid me in my future endeavors after I depart from this amazing firm.

From day one, it was clear the firm valued my contributions and created an environment for making a meaningful impact. A major highlight of my time at The Shaughnessy Group was the opportunity to work directly on live M&A advisory deals. I gained invaluable hands-on experience supporting these transactions through detailed industry research and contributing to the preparation of client pitch materials. This exposure deepened my understanding of the intricacies and complexities of M&A transactions, where I felt like a trusted and valued member of the team. The weekly team meetings, combined with comprehensive training materials and valuable industry insights shared on the firm’s website, kept me fully engaged throughout my internship, particularly as I explored potential investment banking jobs. Overall, my time at The Shaughnessy Group was incredibly enriching, and I highly recommend it to future interns seeking a dynamic and rewarding experience in the M&A space.
